About the Studio

Why take lessons?

Private music lessons are one of the best ways to enhance your study of the trumpet.  Access to a professional mentor provides you with many opportunities to ask questions, receive immediate feedback, get performance experience, and to have a positive, experienced role model.  Private study serves as an excellent accompaniment to school or community band programs and youth orchestras. Participation in school band and other similar programs gives you the opportunity to play in a group setting, work on ensemble skills, accrue performance experience, and apply what you have learned in your own individual study and practice in context, while private study gives you one-on-one tutoring and training that will allow you to accelerate your progress and reach your full potential as a trumpet player and musician.

Why study with William?

If you are looking for trumpet lessons in Orlando, the greater Central Florida area, or even online, your first step is to find a qualified teacher.  Furthermore, you should look for a teacher who inspires you to be a better musician, trumpet player, and person. While I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University, and I regularly perform with the premier performing arts ensembles in Orlando, Central Florida, and the rest of the state, these credentials are not necessarily reasons to study in my trumpet studio.  I do think that a teacher's credentials on paper are important, and you can review mine here, but many people have credentials that look impressive on paper. The most important reason to join my trumpet studio is the success that my students regularly achieve. Many of my students are All-State players, All-County players, first-chair players at their schools, and soloists at school concerts, football halftime shows, and competitions.  My students are very important to me, and I am committed to their success not only as trumpet players, but their growth as people.  Students who study music at a more recreational level become very knowledgeable about the trumpet and music in general with a great concept of sound and musical style that will help foster a lifelong love of music.

Success in Music, Success in Life

I could pontificate about the positive effects that the study of music has on the developing brains of young people, but I think it is simpler and more effective to refer you to what some of the world's most successful and influential people have said:

“Studying music encourages self-discipline and diligence, traits that carry over into intellectual pursuits and that lead to effective study and work habits. An association of music and math has, in fact, long been noted. Creating and performing music promotes self-expression and provides self-gratification while giving pleasure to others. For all these reasons, it deserves strong support in our educational system, along with the other arts, the sciences, and athletics.” – Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Leading Heart Surgeon, Baylor College of Music.

“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.” – Plato

“The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic…music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment.” William Bennett, Former US Secretary of Education

The following article from Forbes expounds on these ideas further: https://www.forbes.com/sites/evaamsen/2019/06/25/high-school-students-do-better-in-science-math-and-english-if-they-also-take-music-lessons/#47e681852fda

Interested in lessons?

Students have several options for lessons in my studio depending on their interests. A beginning student might opt for 30 minute lessons focused on basic trumpet technique to help them master the basic concepts for fast-tracked success in band at school. An intermediate student might want to arrange 45 minute lessons, so that time can be devoted to the rudiments of music theory as well as trumpet technique. Advanced students should aim for hour-long or 90-minute-long weekly lessons that will give them the opportunity to explore advanced trumpet techniques, standard trumpet repertoire, ongoing music theory work, and the cultivation of artistic expression and musicality. Just click here to contact me or submit the application form at the bottom of this page, and we can set up the perfect plan for your music needs.

Fees and Scheduling

Lessons are available in lengths of 30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes, either weekly or through an Annual Lesson Program depending on the student's interest, age, and ability. The Annual Lesson Program schedule loosely follows the schedule of Orange County (Florida) Public Schools with most lessons occurring Sunday afternoon through Tuesday evening each week.
